How we work at away

A different operating system for work.

away is being built as a Teal organisation, where people have the autonomy to make decisions, the safety to be themselves, and the responsibility to help the organisation evolve.

Teal is not the absence of structure. It is a different kind of structure: one built around trust, clarity and distributed ownership.

Power & fear. The chief decides.

Rigid hierarchy. Rules over people.

AWAY IS HERE

The five organisational paradigms from Frédéric Laloux’s Reinventing Organizations, the framework away builds on.

Teal, in short

Trust people closest to the work, and let the organisation evolve.

Instead of concentrating every decision at the top, people are trusted to take ownership, seek advice and act. The organisation becomes more responsive, transparent and capable of evolving through the people working within it. It rests on three foundations:

Foundation A

Self-management

Authority is distributed across clearly defined roles instead of a managerial hierarchy. People seek advice rather than permission, and own their decisions.

Foundation B

Wholeness

You shouldn't have to become a different person at work. Honesty, care and vulnerability belong inside the organisation. People are humans, not resources.

Foundation C

Evolutionary purpose

The organisation listens to its people, customers and environment, and is allowed to discover what it wants to become rather than following a fixed plan.

Teal is

  • Distributed authority with clear ownership
  • Seeking advice before acting
  • Transparency and accountability
  • A practice that keeps evolving

Teal is not

  • No authority, or everyone deciding everything
  • Waiting for unanimous consensus
  • Complete freedom without consequences
  • A fixed management formula

Learn Teal with us.

Six short films documenting what we understand about Teal, how it changes the way organisations operate, and what happens when we practise it ourselves.

Teal is not something we have completed. We're documenting what we learn as we build.
